World Champion Sanctioning Bodies
To be recognised as a world boxing champion you will need to grab one of the 4 major belts;
WBC, WBA,IBF or the WBO.
These 4 world titles are available amongst the 17 weight-classes in the sport so everyone get more of an opportunity.
Top fighters like Inoue, Crawford, Usyk and Canelo have held all 4 titles at once making them undisputed which is a great accomplishment.
Rules are simple, you keep winning, you move up the ranking system until you eventually get a title shot. Each sanctioning body has its own ranking system so you have know where you stand. There’s thousands of fighters trying to reach that same spot but only a limited amount of prizes available.
The sanctioning body will normally mandate the fight and its up to the rank fighters to figure out a deal. If not then the sanctioning bodies may intervene by either forcing the fight or revoking titles from people.
As part of the rules, a fighter (Challenger or Champ) has pays a small percentage fee to the sanctioning body they’re ranked under.
Some may believe that its unfair for sanctioning bodies to take a percentage of a fighters purse but you must remember that Boxing is primarily a business. Having a world title attached to your name boosts your status which ultimate can result in demanding more money for fights so of course they want their cut.
